Meet Kate

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am excited to announce my candidacy for Moderator of Town Meeting.  I ask for your support and for your vote on May 4th.

Those of us who serve in Town Meeting know how important this position is to the functioning of Town Meeting, which in turn reflects our entire community. The Moderator sets the tone for Town Meeting, ensuring that debates are conducted fairly, directing our many questions to appropriate town staff, and allowing all sides of an issue to be presented and heard. The Moderator appoints the Advisory Committee, on whom we all count for rigorous analysis of the warrant articles that come before us. In all of that, the Moderator needs to ensure that all community voices are heard and treated with equal dignity and respect.

The Moderator’s role is also technical, reviewing articles for form and ruling on whether proposed amendments are within the scope of the original article. This work also requires the Moderator to be transparent and equitable, and it is critical to making sure that Town Meeting’s decisions cannot be successfully challenged in court or by the Attorney General.

My personal and professional background have prepared me well for this role. I’ve lived in Brookline for 28 years with my husband, Raphael Bueno. Our two grown daughters went through the Brookline public schools and graduated from Brookline High School.  After getting my law degree from the University of Chicago, I moved here in 1993 and worked for the Securities and Exchange Commission for ten years. Most recently, I’ve been General Counsel and Chief Compliance officer for a socially responsible investment advisor. I have served the town as an associate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals since 2015 and a Precinct 8 Town Meeting Member for the past five years.

I am passionate about Brookline and its future.  My pledge to you is that I will conduct myself as Moderator in a fair, transparent, and even-handed way so that each of us as Town Meeting Members is able to help fulfill our critical responsibilities to Brookline’s governance.

I welcome your questions and advice and look forward to speaking with you in the coming months. Most of all, I hope to earn your endorsement and support.

Kate Poverman
